Beyond the Brush: Complete Oral Health Care
September 26, 2017
Taking care of your mouth is about more than just brushing your teeth. Here are some simple things you can do beyond brushing to take care of your smile.
Floss: Be sure to clean between your teeth once a day, for 2-3 minutes. This should be done with an ADA approved interdental cleaner, such as conventional dental floss, a water flosser, or an approved dental pick. If flossing is difficult, talk to Dr. Harihar Kumar about flossing alternatives.
Use Mouthwash: Though never a substitute for brushing and flossing, the addition of mouthwash to a dental health routine can be beneficial for some people. Choose a therapeutic mouthwash, rather than a cosmetic one, and be sure to check for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the packaging to guarantee a quality product.
Eat Well: Be sure to eat a mouth-healthy diet, full of calcium, phosphorous, lean protein, and vitamins. This will help keep your mouth healthy and strong. Avoid prolonged contact with acidic or sugary foods, and don’t chew on hard substances like ice. These will all do damage to your teeth.
Chew Gum: Chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes immediately after eating helps clean teeth by promoting saliva production. The saliva is your body’s first defense against cavities. It fortifies tooth enamel and removes plaque and food particles from the mouth.
Visit Your Dentist: Of course, you need to support your at-home habits with a visit to your dentist twice a year. This will make sure your teeth stay as clean as possible. It will also catch any problems early, helping to prevent dental emergencies. For an appointment in the Toms River, New Jersey area, call Toms River Smiles Dental at 732-244-1163.
